Cherry Trees

Postby steven1967 » Thu Jun 16, 2016 8:50 pm

I have several sweet cherry trees. The trees are around 4 years old. The past two years the tree is producing pea size cherries. Is this normal? Do you know what causes this?
thanks.

These trees are still quite young and this may be the reason for the small fruit. If there are lots of small cherries forming on the young trees, there may not be enough foliage to support the production of larger fruit. Once the trees are larger and more mature, this shouldn't be a problem. Are these standard trees or dwarf trees? Dwarf sweet cherry trees start to produce good fruit in 4-5 years but standard trees can take between 5-7 years before they produce quality fruit.
Be sure your trees are getting full sun and are fertilized with a good organic fertilizer. Also be sure they are getting enough water as the fruit is forming. If they don't get adequate water, the cherries will remain small.
