HAve a new farm with 2 rose of sharon bushes which are out of hand! Can I prune / thin them now as per your video? One is full of blossoms and is very top heavy and bending over and the other ( which is somewhat shaded,) doesn't have as many blossoms but appears healthy. they are in Aiken, S.C.

The best time to prune Rose of Sharon is in late March through early May before the leaves begin to open. This shrub produces flowers on the current season's growth so pruning in spring will encourage more new growth and thus more potential flowers. You could probably cut it back some now but you will be cutting off flowers. You may also want to consider thinning it out some but do not remove more than 20 - 25% of it's growth at this time. Any severe pruning should wait until next spring.
