Gardenia help...

Postby treehugger » Wed Jan 20, 2010 1:32 pm

HI there,
I just bought a gorgeous gardenia (which is rather large) for my home. After bringing it home a few days ago, the leaves are starting to wilt and the fresh buds are starting to look very sad. I really don't want to kill this gorgeous plant but I'm not too sure how to properly care for it. The pot that it's in is just a cheap plastic and most likely needs replanting...?
I live in Calgary, Alberta (Canada) and live in a home that has floor to ceiling windows that face westbound. I'm just wondering what I can do to rescue it before I end up killing it?
Help?
Thanks for your time.

These gardenias are normally grown in growth chambers in greenhouses under perfect conditions. When they get to your home, the conditions are no longer ideal! You should place your shrub in a COOL, bright location, a northeast or east facing window is ideal (west facing may be too bright). Water it wet to dry. Over watering is a main cause of death for these plants. When the soil becomes dry, water it well to saturate the soil but then do not water it again until the soil drys out again. These plants are subject to bud drop and yellowing leaves and it may take a while for it to come back.
