red birch tree

Postby dansinbare » Sat Jul 31, 2010 6:00 pm

i bought a red birch tree at a road side stand that sells plants and such. the tree is approx.10ft tall and about 3 inches.it was in a container 24w/20d.i transplanted it to a pot 30w/30d.i used leafgrow soil with bio-zone.ive noticed the bark on the tree has virticle cracks and a lot of leaves have fallin off.my question is this tree strugling with the transplant or is it dying?there are still plenty of leaves left on it but not as much as when i bought it.did i yet again learn an expensive lesson,i.e $175 for plant $160 for container? thanx bob

When did you purchase and transplant this red birch? Was it well rooted in the original pot when you transplanted it? Did the new container have drainage holes? How often and how much are you watering the tree? Sorry for all the questions but I'm just trying to get more information in order to give you a good answer. It may simply be that the tree is suffering from transplant shock. Be sure the pot is draining well and that the soil is not soggy. If the pot is draining well, the tree should perk up but again, it depends upon how long ago you did the transplanting.
