Lots of greenery but no flowers from the spring bulbs

Postby nance » Mon Jun 28, 2010 3:40 pm

Hi Lori - I wanted to find out what I can do to get flowers from my spring bulbs for next year. I have about 30 spring bulbs planted that when they bloom are the most spectacular welcome to the spring - tulips, daffodils, hiacynth. Just glorious!! So, you can understand my emense disappointment when all I got this year was lots of green leaves but no flowers! It was such a disappointment! What can I do to make sure I get full blooms again next year? Or, is there a "time span" for spring bulbs that they only last a couple of years?

Please help! Thanks! Nancy

Nancy,
It depends upon what spring bulbs you have. Many tulip varieties do not bloom well after the first few years. Even some daffodil varieties don't bloom reliably year after year. The key is to get quality bulbs from a reliable supplier. I you haven't done so, be sure to fertilize your bulb beds with a good bulb fertilizer like Espoma Bulb-tone. Never fertilize them with high nitrogen lawn fertilizer as this will promote lots of foliage at the expense of flowers! Here is tip from our website about why daffodils might not bloom: http://www.inthegardenradio.com/v.php?pg=714. I hope this helps!
